Adjust SRT latency for an unstable connection
If an SRT stream shows artifacts or brief interruptions, check the connection's Latency setting. It provides a time buffer that can help recover lost packets before playback.
A larger buffer can help on an unstable route, but it adds delay. It cannot replace sufficient upload capacity. If your connection cannot sustain the bitrate, reduce the load or investigate the network first.
Check the units
The same delay uses different values in different interfaces:
| Setting | Unit | Example for 500 ms |
|---|---|---|
| SRT URL parameter in OBS / FFmpeg | Microseconds | latency=500000 |
| SRT Latency field in vMix | Milliseconds | 500 |
URL units are documented in the OBS guide and FFmpeg documentation. For the separate vMix field, see the vMix SRT settings.
Adjust your stream into StreamVi
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and locate the SRT URL copied from your StreamVi project. Keep a copy of its current value, then replace the existing latency value or add the parameter if it is missing.
If the URL already has parameters after ?, separate the new one with &. For example, 500 ms is written as &latency=500000. Do not add a duplicate latency parameter or change the server address or Stream ID. This example shows only the parameter; use the full connection details from your own project.
In vMix, change the dedicated Latency field in the SRT output settings, using the units in the table.
Find a value that suits your route
The 500 ms example is not a universal recommendation. Start with the settings recommended for your server, then increase latency in small steps while comparing test broadcasts.
Check both picture stability and the delay your audience will experience. If the change does not help, review your bitrate, selected server, and network conditions.
